Bunions: Hallux Abducto Valgus (HAV)

A Bunion is a deformity of the big toe joint. A complex condition involving the joint, ligaments and muscles around the joint, bunions are a sideways deviation of the great toe towards the lesser toes.

Bunions often have a genetic component but can also be caused by ill fitting footwear, biomechanics , sporting activities, arthritis, inflammatory diseases and trauma.

Treatment: After a thorough medical history is taken, a biomechanical and gait assessment are performed.  Almost always conservative treatment in the form of footwear advice and modification and or orthotics will help to relieve the pain and discomfort of joint pain. Surgical correction is an option, but should only be considered when conservative measures fail to either address the pain or ongoing deformity.
